Dr. Luis “Alex” Antezana is a Plastic and Reconstructive surgery resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he also completed his medical education. Although he and his family have resided in Charlotte, North Carolina for the past decade, his journey began in Bolivia and Peru. He has fond memories of the long potato truck pilgrimages he took with his mother to villages needing her medical help. This dedication to one’s community was the norm where he was raised. Seeing firsthand the interconnectedness of family, community, and health led him to embrace his approach to patient care – one that understands the strength of a tightly knit community as it makes porous the boundary between the individual and their support system. After moving to the United States and living across the east coast, he attended Duke University while running a nonprofit organization aimed at funding tuition for overseas medical students. Upon graduating, he pursued his interest in innovation by working in a healthcare start-up in the research triangle area. His current interests include hand surgery, microsurgery, and medical entrepreneurship. As a future plastic surgeon, he envisions himself serving his Hispanic community as a familiar face in a time of uncertainty and vulnerability. He seeks to be both a resource and an advocate for their health and recognition. He hopes to, perhaps one day, return to South America with his future kids as they travel to help the communities that raised him.
